Urban Spree Prints and Mode 2 release "Crowd Vibes"

Urban Spree Prints and Mode 2 release "Crowd Vibes". The 4-colour screen print was produced in Berlin at Oliver Nerlich Studio in December 2024.
.
"This is the third series produced through Urban Spree, and the previous “Touch & Feel Some More” made me realise that I needed to work alongside the printer. This allows me to learn more about the process itself, and get as close as possible to my original ideas, drawings or paintings.
.
I discovered so much about the intricacies of transforming a painting into a silkscreen print on this particular project, as it was also a real challenge for Oliver Nerlich himself; faced with my particular demands, from of his usual customers.
.
From the adaptation of the original piece to the colour-separation, using halftone screen bitmaps, he explained to me how to place the “dots” at different angles for each colour, so that this rotation between each separate colour would spread them evenly, instead of a linear manner, one over the other. I learned that this is called the “offset rosette”, in the conventional CMYK printing process.
.
The higher the output resolution of the bitmap, the more regular and wider the range of dots, enhancing tonal range and detail on the final print.
.
The background red on “Touch & Feel Some More” was too light at first, so the finished prints went back, were set back into place and that colour was redone. Colour on a backlit screen, from which Pantone references were chosen, don’t work on printed paper.
.
Spending a whole day at the print studio, we methodically homed in on the right colour for each screen, by trial and error, from the lightest colour of the first screen to the darkest of the fourth, working with different opacities; that original piece from June 2010 on my mind the whole time.
.
We hope that you now appreciate as much the end result itself, as much as how we got there." Mode 2, December 2024
