About the Exhibition
Urban Spree Galerie presents « into the Void », Victor Ash’s second solo show with the gallery after the seminal 10-year anniversary exhibition of the Astronaut/Cosmonaut in 2017.
« Into the Void » propels us into a new « Eclipse » cycle with a series of paintings addressing the meaning of the universe - or the lack of it.
While having completed the David Bowie cycle linking the singer to the city of Berlin through a series of milestone & iconic murals and songs dispersed over 12 years - which came to a final draw by the death of the singer (Astronaut = Space Oddity / Moon = Ashes to Ashes / First Eclipse and final album = Blackstar), Victor Ash never ceased to paint the mystery of the universe, the conquest of space as a final frontier, a reflection of mankind, interrogating its (dark) inner self, the eclipse as a metaphor of humanity, of things to come.
Among the series of new paintings, Victor Ash painted 3 large formats (300 x 200 cm) during a week-long outdoor residency at Urban Spree. These specific paintings are inspired by never-before-seen infrared images captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope which were published in July 2022, pushing further our (limited) comprehension of the universe.
Alongside this new series of eclipse and circle paintings on canvas, we will be showing rare original Astronauts on paper and sold out screen prints from the archives of Victor Ash.
« Rocket engines burning fuel so fast
Up into the night sky they blast
Through the universe the engines whine
Could it be the end of man and time? » (…)
