Since 2006 Maybeshewill have released four full length albums of towering, cinematic instrumental music. After a decade long career that saw them tour across four continents they bowed out in 2016 with a sold out show at London's Koko. Having reformed briefly at the request of The Cure's Robert Smith for a show at his Meltdown Festival in 2018, 2021 sees them return to the studio to work on their first new material since 2014's Fair Youth.
"Noisy brilliance that gets right inside the battered crevices of your skull and pounds on the sides" ‐ NME
"It's a rush, the sound of a band throwing everything at scaling peaks of their own making." - Drowned in Sound
"The perfect example of how to get post-rock instrumental music right." - DIY
"Not only is their wellspring of underlying grandeur being tapped, it's also clear that there's even greater things to come" ‐ Kerrang
SUPPORT: Alice Gift
Emancipated from his bands Liste Noire and Velvet Condom, the Berlin-based German-French singer-songwriter distils his stories into chanson-noir and dreamy noise-pop. For the first time completely and alone in his laboratory, Alice Gift now wants to decide on the dose himself. His stage name as well as the title of the album refer to the quote by the alchemist Paracelsus: "All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; only the dose makes a thing not poison".
Following these concepts, the self-proclaimed 'Tropical-Goth' started to record his first solo album a few years ago, playing all instruments himself (vocals, guitar, keyboard, bass, drums). At that time he called it his 'Ego' album. Aesthetically speaking, the record shows the whole range of his influences: The mixture of dreamy melodies and razor-sharp noise, all according to a 90s Shoegaze recipe with a touch of grunge taste. The androgyny from glam, the French-influenced chanson (accordion on the French sung 'Jeunesse Dorée'), the melancholy and coldness from cold wave. Distinctive are his high voice and a preference for dramatic and epic compositions.
Other themes on the album are: fatherlessness (Fatherland), idealism (Eutopia, Denial), the influence of strong women (Pygmalionne), Anxiety (Trance Park, Glow), polyamour (Water Love Sign), body shaming (Nudity), populism (Blue Is Not Your Colour), and elitism (Jeunesse Dorée).
A few years ago he met his partner Djamila Paris and included her in his project. In the beginning she controlled the lights during live shows until she learned to play drums and then keyboard as an autodidact for him. Together they rehearse in the crypt of a lonely cemetery in Neukölln, Berlin.
