El Segundo. Instinctive Travels to the Hauptstadt
Berlin: capitol of creativity, libertine playground of Europe. Is it truth or myth? A gift or a burden? Berlin rooted curator Lukas Feireiss invited Dutch artists Baschz Leeft and Janjoost Jullens to co-host an exhibition examining the most prevailing myths on the Hauptstadt. Merging backgrounds in societal research, design, interaction and street culture El Segundo provides a thorough but humorous view on this city of arts, activism, immigrant entrepreneurs and omnipresent pink pipes.
From one city to another the exhibition features works from all Rotterdam based artists:Baschz Leeft is an omnimedial visual artist, designer and curator with a profound love for mass and sub cultures. Janjoost Jullens is a researcher, writer and art director who uses arts to put societal issues in new perspectives and to fuel innovations. In gewisser Weise ist wohl jede Stadt Nutznießerin und Gefangene Ihres eigenen Mythos und Klischee - und Berlin ist ein Paradebeispiel für dieses Phänomen. Seit vielen Jahren gilt die deutsche Hauptstadt international als begehrte Anlaufstelle unzähliger Künstler und Kreativer aus aller Welt.
Die von Lukas Feireiss kuratierte Gruppenausstellung El Segundo. Instinctive Travels to the Hauptstadt in der Urban Spree Galerie wirft einen persönlichen Blick auf einige der vorherrschenden Mythen über die UNESCO "Stadt des Designs" aus der Perspektive einer Gruppe von Rotterdam ansässigen niederländischen Künstlern.
Das Künstlerduo Baschz Leeft & Janjoost Jullens entwickelt hierfür zusammen mit dem bildenden Künstler Oliver Otten und dem Grafik-Design-Team Studio Spass eine Serie von speziell gefertigten Berlin-Ikonen, die sich unteranderem mit Fragen nach Individualität, persönlicher Freiheit und uneingeschränkter Kreativität in der Stadt auseinandersetzen. Mittels unterschiedlichster Medien wie Film, Fotografie, Illustration und Installation wird den Eigenschaften und Bedingungen der Stadt Berlin hier kritisch-kreativ nachgespürt. El Segundo.
