About the Exhibition
Urban Spree Galerie presents "Bastards 2010-2024", a solo exhibition by the Polish graphic designer and artist Paweł Ryżko.
The Opening will take place on Saturday, March 15th, 2025, from 16:00 to 20:00 in presence of the artist + special book release and signature.
In Polish, “Bastards” (bękarty) is a term commonly used for posters designed and produced despite having not been commissionned by anyone. Created purely out of artistic necessity, bastards are both an expression of artistic autonomy and the result of the artist-designer’s battle with the constraint of format.
Inscribed in a long tradition of Polish graphic design and posters, the Exhibition "Bastards 2010-2024" presents for the first time in Berlin a selection of 24 posters designed by Paweł Ryżko and other additional graphic elements. This presentation is complimented by the Release of Paweł Ryżko’s monograph "Posters 2010–2024", showcasing 80 of the artist’s poster works. The dust jacket, designed by Sainer (Przemysław Blejzyk), was produced using the silkscreen printing technique and the cover includes a hand-mounted original graphic. A collector’s edition is also available, each copy featuring a unique cover with a one-of-a-kind graphic created using stencil printing.
----------------------------------------------------
Born in 1984 in Warsaw’s Bródno district, Paweł Ryżko is an artist renowned for his poster design, mural art, and painting. A graduate of the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, he completed his MA diploma in poster design under the supervision of Prof. Sławomir Iwański in 2011. In Paweł Ryżko’s works, compositions of flat colors and geometric shapes take on unexpected symbolic meanings, often blurring the lines between abstraction and figurativeness. Drawing from avant-garde design traditions and urban arts, he has crafted a distinctive visual language of expression. Paweł Ryżko lives and works in Warsaw.
The exhibition has been created in Warsaw at BD Gallery in December 2024 and is now available to the German public. Our gratitude goes to Cezary Hunkiewicz without whom this exhibition would not have been possible.
