About

After the huge success of "Redheaded Peckerwood" in 2011, Christian Patterson's much-awaited follow-up photobook "Bottom of the Lake" is a facsimile of the artist's family's 1973 Yellow Pages directory for his hometown of Fond du Lac ("Bottom of the Lake").

The book includes found markings and reproductions of inserted materials, along with Patterson's own drawings & photographs.

Bottom of the Lake is a book within a book that carefully combines the original, found, fact-based phone book with the artist's highly subjective re-imagination of his hometown; it playfully juxtaposes different documentary forms and ways of seeing to create a deeply personal, darkly humorous "other" book. In addition, the experience of the book is extended beyond its pages by an interactive feature - a telephone number attached to the book that connects users with over 100 experiences mixing field audio recordings, found archival audio and performances that re-imagine and re-create the artist's hometown.

About the Photographer:

Christian Patterson (b. 1972) is an American photographer living and working in Brooklyn, New York. He was nominated for the 2007 Santa Fe Prize for Photography, the 2008 New York Photo Awards Best Fine Art Series, and the 2009 Baum Award for American Photographers. His work is exhibited, collected and published internationally.

Patterson’s first work, Sound Affects (2002–2005), explores Memphis, Tennessee, as a musical place through visual arrangements of light, color, rhythm, and form. In this work, photographs serve as visual analogues to sound and music and are sometimes exhibited with musical accompaniment. The work has been exhibited internationally and was published as a monograph in 2008 by Edition Kaune, Sudendorf (Cologne).

His second monograph, Redheaded Peckerwood, was published by MACK in 2011 and won the prestigious 2012 Recontres d’Arles Author Book Award. He was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2013.
