In ‘The Raw and the Cooked’, Bialobrzeski continues his study of Asian megacities. He observes their rapid, ecologically unsound growth and constant movement. He shows us the disappearance of old structures built on a human scale in favour of towers reaching for the sky, in these cities that have become so spectacular.
In his book of photos, The Raw and the Cooked, Peter Bialobrzeski sets forth the essence of his observations from his unique series of photos about the development of Asian mega-cities (Neon Tigers, Lost in Transition) and their slums (Case Study Homes). Starting with the simplest, homemade vernacular architecture, based on human proportions and made with found construction materials, his photos range as far as the exorbitant planned cities of glass, steel, and concrete. Buildings rise higher and higher into the sky, more and more resources are wasted, the new unmercifully shoves aside the old. Seductively beautiful tableaux from fourteen different countries depict the kind of “progress” that triggers a sense of anxiety and trepidation. Where is all of this leading?
About the author
Peter Bialobrzeski (*1961 in Wolfsburg) studied communication design with an emphasis on photography from 1988 to 1993 at the Folkwangschule Essen and at the London College of Printing. His works have been exhibited in Europe, the US, Asia, and Africa. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the World Press Photo Award in 2003 and 2010, the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis in 2004, 2006, and 2010, the "Schönste deutsche Bücher" award in 2004, and the Dr. Erich Salomon Award of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh) in 2012. Since 2002 he has been a professor of photography at the University of the Arts Bremen. Peter Bialobrzeski lives in Hamburg.
