About the artist
Vhils (Portugal 1987) aka Alexandre Farto has exhibited his works in many countries and institutions. He started his carreer with graffiti and he is working on large scale murals. Vhils follows a specific process. He tears away at his medium by drilling, chiseling, or using chemicals such as bleach, making his images (predominantly portraits) inextricable from the material itself. With this subtractive process, Vhils unites elements of painting and sculpture and reflects on how the built environment absorbs social changes and development.
Peeling back the layers of our material culture like a contemporary urban archaeologist, Vhils reflects on the impact of urbanity, development, and increased uniformity on landscapes and people’s identities around the globe.
